Apple Maps #2

applemaps2Apple Maps errors – example 2.

The map shows Allowah St joining onto Evelyn St. Well it used to, several decades ago! That section of street has been closed off ever since I’ve lived in Newcastle.

And the map shows that you can drive north from the loop on top of Braye Park. That was closed off at least 10 years ago.

iPhone update

applemapsI’ve just updated from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 5. So far I’m really liking it, especially how light it is compared with the 3GS.

But I feel compelled to weigh in on the Apple Maps debacle. How bad is it? Really bad. Without even trying I quickly found 4 examples from my local area. I shudder to think how many errors would be found if looked hard!

Get gone

What is it with Apple iTunes and the “Get” button on the podcasts page?? First it is there and then after an update its not there and then it is there and then its not, so on ad infinitum … with the latest update its not there, again.

Maybe its a bit like my cat who sheds fur during the warmer months? iTunes sheds UI according to the season?

Irritationary

I got stung by an iOS update on my iPhone 3GS – again. This time I was updating from iOS 5.01 to 5.1 and all seemed to progress OK right up to the point where the iPhone rebooted. At this point, the phone would just show the Apple logo for about a minute followed by a progress bar that would not budge.

In the end I had to do a Restore (using the button on the Device page in iTunes) followed by a restore of settings from a backup, followed by a resyncing of all my apps/music/books – all of which took several hours.

Not very “resolutionary”, more “irritationary”.

Favourite music

Thanks to iTunes, sqlTunes, SQL Server and my inner nerd(*), I can report definitively that my top three favourite music album purchases of 2011 were:

  1. Songs Lost and Stolen (2011) – Bella Hardy
  2. Angel Station (1979) – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band
  3. Punching Air In the Nyah EP (2010) – Back Back Forward Punch

(*) who am I kidding with “inner nerd” – I’m nerd all the way to the surface. Here’s the SQL that gave me the results – note the use of various keywords that I added to track comments in iTunes in order to exclude singles, partial albums, or bonus tracks from the computation of ratings.

select album, artist, AVG(Rating) as Rating, COUNT(*) as TrackCount
 from Track T
 where
 ISNULL(Genre, '') <> 'Classical'
 AND ISNULL(Genre, '') <> 'Podcast'
 AND isnull(Comments, '') NOT like '%Single%'
 AND isnull(Comments, '') NOT like '%PartialAlbum%'
 AND isnull(Comments, '') NOT like '%BonusTrack%'
 AND Album is not null
and (select MAX([Date Added]) from track T1
      where T1.Album = T.Album and T1.[Date Added]
between '1 jan 2011' and '31 dec 2011') is not null
 group by album, artist
 having count(*) > 1
 order by AVG(Rating) desc

iOS 5 Upgrade. Further pain

After taking most of the day resyncing my music to my iPhone (as it was downconverting music files to 128kbps) I then found that every time I connected my iPhone to my computer iTunes would pop up with a dialog saying that the previous restore had failed, and giving me the option to “Cancel”, “Continue Restore”, or “Delete Backup”. It didn’t seem to matter what option I chose I ended up with either iTunes not recognising the phone, or producing another error, or offering me the choice to set up the device as new phone.

Eventually I got things sorted out (but had to resync all my music again ). I have no idea what exact steps finally fixed my problem. Needless to say I won’t be that keen to rush into installing future iOS updates.

iOS 5 upgrade woes

Just upgraded my iPhone to iOS 5. The upgrade process was horrible and painful.

After several attempts where the upgrade would just stop with an inexplicable error message, eventually the phone restarted with iOS 5 and proceeded to ask a few setup questions. At the “Do you want to use iCloud” question, if I chose No, then clicking Next would do nothing. I eventually chose “Yes” just to proceed, but then a couple of questions later at the “Do you want to use the Find my iPhone feature” no matter whether I selected Yes or No, pressing Next had no effect. Eventually I found that if I restarted the iPhone and got back to the setup questions, if I said NO to connecting to WIFI, then I could proceed through the remaining setup questions.

THEN I found that phone was missing all my music, books, and videos. Connecting up with iTunes I found that all my sync settings (which playlists to sync etc) had been had been lost, and I had to manually set them to what they were before and re-sync from iTunes to my iPhone to get content back on.

Upgrade process rating: 1 star out of 5.
